Kate Callen is Executive Communications Manager in the Office of the President at California State University, San Marcos. She entered the communications field as a science writer/editor at the U.S. Public Health Service. She joined United Press International as a features editor and later served as UPI’s San Diego Bureau Chief. She began her career in higher education as News Bureau Director at the University of San Diego, where she also taught journalism. She also has worked at the University of California, most recently as speechwriter to the president of the UC system. She is an alumna of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., ’76) and Columbia University (M.F.A., ’78).
