Students, Science, and Ethics!
Date & Time
Overview
The focus for this program will be on students interested in the ethics of science. If you are a student, or you know some students who might be interested, this is the program to attend. Please join us so that we can hear from and support the next generation.
Ethics Survey

On arriving for our program, guests will have the opportunity to fill out a brief survey designed by students from Montgomery Middle School. This year, Montgomery formed a new Ethics in Science Issues @ Monty (eSIM) club. Students in this club identified two areas of science and technology that they believed raise some difficult ethical challenges:
* Use of Robots in Warfare
* Designer Babies
To help learn more about the perceptions of the public about these issues, the students developed a few survey questions, which we will distribute for this program.
Ethics in Science Awards

We will begin our program by recognizing the winners of the third annual "Ethics in Science" competition (ethicscenter.net/science-fair). To be eligible for this award, high school students received invitations based on the focus of their science projects already accepted for presentation at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. These students, who had already demonstrated their passion for science, took on the challenge of considering the ethical dimensions of science related to the subjects of their projects. The winning students will be recognized in an award ceremony. We look forward to learning something about both the science and the ethical issues raised in their projects.
Discussion of the Issues
The results of the Ethics Survey will be tabulated during the presentations of the Ethics in Science awards. Those results will then be displayed as a starting point for discussion. With the knowledge and wisdom of the students and our audience we hope to identify key issues, find commonground, and articulate the differences that remain.
Please be sure to join us for this important event!
