COSMOS Ethics in Science Awards: 2011

For Summer 2011, the Ethics Center launched a new educational partnership to promote interdisciplinary excellence in California high schoolsin collaboration with COSMOS (the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science).

The inaugural “COSMOS Ethics in Science Essay Contest” recognized eight COSMOS students in the UCSD Summer 2011 program for outstanding analysis of the ethical dimensions of their own hands-on scientific research. Two of the 8 student winners were from San Diego:

  • James Wang (Westview High School, San Diego)
  • Saho Arai (Canyon Crest Academy, San Diego)

And the grand prize winner was:

  • Jack Takahashi (Lynbrook High, San Jose)

The remaining 8 winners included:

  • Sunny He (Cupertino High School, Cupertino)
  • Mukta Kelkar (Gretchen Whitney High, Cerritos)
  • Brian Hou (Mission San Jose High, Fremont)
  • Arjun Lakshmipathy (Irvington High, Fremont)
  • Joyce Zhang (Westlake High, Westlake Village)
