Purpose:
The Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, a collaborative between UCSD, USD, and SDSU, dedicated to science in the public interest, invites applications for its SDSU Faculty Grant-Writing Fellowships which provide a stipend of $2500. Up to seven of these fellowships are available each academic year. Each award is for 4 months from the date of receipt, with the final report in the form of a submitted grant proposal expected at the end of that period.
Fellowship Activities: The primary focus of the SDSU Faculty Fellowship, and a significant part of the Fellow’s time, is spent developing and writing grant applications for external funding with the support of the Center’s Research Development Coordinator. Fellows also attend the activities of the Center, which discuss ethics issues related to research and practice in areas such as stem-cell research, neuroscience, and information technology and, more generally, organizational decision-making. The Fellow’s activity will focus on obtaining external grant support in any area of the Center’s activity. It can also focus on grants designed to improve the ethics of research practice, to improve the ethics of science literacy, and to introduce the ethics of science and technology into university curriculum, practice and organization. The proposal(s) for the Fellowship period must culminate in a grant proposal for external funding. Interdisciplinary collaborative proposals are encouraged between faculty at SDSU and/or faculty at SDSU, USD, and UCSD.
Eligibility: Fellows must be either full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty members, or postdoctoral fellows at SDSU. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated ability at successful grant writing. The Faculty Fellowships are open to all full-time faculty members and post-doctoral fellows, regardless of citizenship. Faculty who are already on maximum overload (125% time) are not eligible for the award. Eligible faculty may submit one application per academic year. Interdisciplinary collaborative projects are encouraged
Application Process:Upon receipt of an application a committee comprising the Center’s representatives from each collaborating institution selects the Faculty Fellows. They will review, rate and rank each application. Applications will be judged on the following criteria:
- quality and clarity of the proposal
- the viability of the proposed grant-writing activity
- the significance and merit of their proposed ethics research
- relevance of the proposed work to the purposes of the Center
- expertise of the applicant in the area of proposed investigation
- evidence of the applicant’s previous grant writing success

Stipends and Conditions:Faculty Fellows will receive a stipend of $2500 for a four-month period. The Center’s grant support staff, coordinated through the School of Public Affairs at SDSU, will assist successful applicants in their grant-writing project. The Faculty Fellow provides an initial research concept, broad ideas on the research project, the overall design of the project, and a clear idea of the methods to be used in conducting the research. The stipend recipient will work with the Research Development Coordinator, the Ethics Center Executive Committee Representative, and the SDSU Research Foundation to develop a final proposal for submission to an external funding agency. The Faculty Fellow will take final responsibility for the writing of the grant proposal.
