Currently Dr. Killea serves as Senior Fellow with the International Community Foundation, where she provides strategic counsel and guidance to this California-based public foundation committed to philanthropy and grant making in Asia and the Americas. Dr. Killea’s service to ICF comes after serving five years as the foundation’s President & CEO (1996-2001).
During her tenure at ICF, Dr. Killea expanded ICF’s grant making in Latin America, especially along Mexico’s Northern Border with the United States, and spearheaded the foundation’s philanthropic initiatives in China.

Her current civic and volunteer activities include serving on Boards of Directors and participating in a number of organizations: Board of Overseers, International Roundtable Emeritus member at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies both at University of California at San Diego; Board of Trustees, Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center; Advisory Board, International Visitors Council of San Diego; member Rotary Breakfast Club of San Diego; Board member of National Conflict Resolution Center; Advisory Board, Center for Ethics in Science and Technology.
Dr. Killea’s distinguished career includes:
1944 - 1956: Military Intelligence and the Central Intelligence Agency after World War II.
1974 - 1978: Executive Vice President of “Fronteras de las Californias”, a local government, university, and business project to expand joint efforts with Baja California and California.
1978 - 1982: Member of San Diego City Council, one year as San Diego Vice-Mayor.
1989 - 1996: California State Senator, 39th Senate District. Prior to being elected to the State Senate, she served seven years as a member of the California State Assembly.
Dr. Killea earned a Ph. D. in Latin American History from the University of California San Diego; M.A. from the University of San Diego; B.A. from the Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, Texas. A 36-year resident of California, she also lived ten years in Mexico and traveled extensively in Latin America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region. She speaks Spanish fluently. |
